Frequently Asked Questions

What is Parkway Bible Assembly?

Parkway Bible Assembly is a local church located in Tobaccoville, NC, dedicated to serving the community through worship, fellowship, and outreach programs. We welcome everyone to join us in our mission of faith and service.

Why do many of the females have some type of covering on their heads?

(1 Corinthians 11:3-16) God has revealed His order in the local church and has given instructions for its visible, symbolic demonstration. The covered heads of the females and the uncovered heads of the males display God’s order. A covered head does not demean a woman – instead, it provides her with the privilege of covering human glory so that God’s glory may be preeminent.

Why do so many of the people bring their Bibles?

(2 Timothy 3:15-17; Hebrews 4:12; Romans 10:17; Acts 17:11; 1 Peter 2:2) The Bible is our authority in faith and practice, and we encourage everyone to examine all we do and say by what God has communicated to us in the Scriptures. Active participation in the study of God’s Word is vital for spiritual growth and maturity.

Why do you not take up an offering?

(3 John 7; Ephesians 2:8-9; 2 Corinthians 9:7) We are convinced that God provides for His work through His people, and we trust Him to prompt us to give back to Him. Choosing to not take up an offering gives greater room for giving to be done willingly, not out of guilt or embarrassment. Additionally, we desire to never encourage the false idea that giving financially can help “buy” entrance into heaven.

Why do you use the term “assembly”?

(Colossians 1:18) In our culture, the word “church” is normally employed to identify a building where Christians meet, while in the New Testament this term refers to the believers rather than to the building. To emphasize this distinction, the word “assembly” is used.

Why do you not have people “join the church” and become “members”?

(1 Corinthians 12:27; Ephesians 5:30) Unfortunately, many people assume that being a “member” of a local church means they are assured of heaven, when in reality a relationship with God is available only through trusting the Lord Jesus Christ as Savior. Every believer in Christ is a member of His body by virtue of faith in Him. The early church pattern was that of being received into “fellowship”.

What are your service times?

Our service times are as follows: Sunday Lord’s Supper at 9:30 AM and Ministry meeting from 10:45-11:45 AM; Prayer Meeting & Bible study on Wednesdays at 7:00 PM, and various community events throughout the month. Check our calendar for specific dates and times.

Why do the males do all of the public leading in the meetings?

(1 Corinthians 11:3; 1 Timothy 2:11-12) God’s plan is for leadership in the local church to be exercised by the males. This in no way lowers the value of the females to the assembly, but rather recognizes God’s revealed order.

Why are you “non-denominational”?

(Romans 12:5; 1 Corinthians 10:17; 12:12; Ephesians 4:4; 1:22) Denominational names are not found in Scripture and are divisive in nature. The unity of the Body of Christ is important to the Lord, and we desire to demonstrate our commitment to this. Though associated with the other local churches, each local church in the New Testament is seen to be autonomous, answering to the Lord Jesus, the Head of the church.

Why do you not have “a senior pastor”?

(Acts 20:17; Titus 1:5-7; 1 Peter 5:1-4; James 5:14; Ephesians 4:12; 1 Peter 2:5,9) The Lord Jesus Christ is the Chief Shepherd and the Head of the church. Scripture teaches that a plurality of leaders (known interchangeably as elders, overseers, and shepherds) are raised up by God to function together in the governing of the local church. This also encourages the active participation of all believers, as holy and royal priests, in the work of the ministry.

Why do you not have crosses or other symbols on the walls?

(Matthew 18:20; 28:19; 1 Corinthians 11:23-27) Experience demonstrates that man-made pictures and symbols become distracting or destructive for the people of God. We are convicted that our relationship with the living Christ, Who promises to be with us when we meet in His Name, is represented by the two symbols He Himself selected – baptism and the Lord’s Supper.

Why do you celebrate the Lord’s Supper every Sunday?

(Acts 20:7; 1 Corinthians 11:26) Though we are never commanded to do so, the pattern of the early church was to gather on the first day of the week to break bread. Christ’s instruction to Paul reveals that “as often” as we do this, we proclaim the Lord’s death until He returns. Corporately remembering our Savior never “gets old.”
